A short drive north from Houston, tucked away just south of The Woodlands, Texas is the Montgomery County Preserve - a greenway that local residents use to walk their dogs or jog and groups use to learn about local flora. The preserve also contains Panther Creek, a natural laboratory to explore the morphology and sedimentological processes of a meandering creek system. The distinctive trait of clear water that flows through Panther Creek allows investigation of numerous features of the creek as well as interact with the processes that form and continually modify them. In the creek, current ripples can be observed forming and migrating downstream while scraping the side of a bar form can reveal the deposits from that process and the sedimentary structures that are a result. Grain size distribution and deposit architecture along the creek can be directly linked to current dynamics that are influenced by the creek morphology. The characteristics of Panther Creek make it a unique location in the Houston area to observe and investigate the fundamental elements of a meandering creek system.
