Senior geoscience advisor who manages Whiting Petroleum’s rock laboratory, and successfully uses technology-driven advances in digital imaging tools to aid exploration efforts.
David received a M.A. degree from the University of St. Andrews in 2007 prior to deciding to study geology. He then attended Texas A&M before earning a M.S. degree in Geology from the University of Texas at Austin working on the stratigraphy, sedimentology, and petrography of the Pearsall Shale in South Texas. In 2011 he went to work for Chesapeake Energy doing operations in the Haynesville Shale before transferring to the Geologic Technology Group. In 2013 he transferred to Devon Energy. There he specializes in in core description at all scales in the various basins which Devon operates. Over time his focus has expanded from traditional techniques to incorporate more digital rock property work and other exotic analysis in order to answer questions at hand as well as collaborate with engineering and petrophysics.
Mark received a B.A. degree from Albion College (Michigan) in 1972 followed by a Ph.D. in Geology from the University of Texas at Austin in 1976. He then joined the research lab of Cities Service Company in Tulsa, Oklahoma for 5 years before moving to Denver in 1981 to work for Coastal Oil and Gas Company as an exploration geologist mainly in the Williston Basin. From 1984 to 2006, he was a consulting geologist before joining Questar Exploration and Production, now QEP Resources, where he is currently working. Mark specializes in the description of cores, cuttings, and petrographic thin sections with a focus on integrating sedimentology and petrology with reservoir studies and petrophysics. He has worked extensively on the Paleozoic reservoirs of the Williston Basin, the Mesozoic rocks and reservoirs around the Gulf of Mexico, and Tertiary carbonate reservoirs in southeast Asia.
