Who Should Attend

All geoscientists that want to understand carbonate deposition and sequence stratigraphy applied to carbonates.

This course will cover the following topics:

  • Carbonate facies
  • Carbonate diagenesis
  • Sequence stratigraphy for carbonates

Course Content

This two-day workshop provides an introduction to the application of carbonate facies, diagenesis, and seismic sequence stratigraphy to exploration and production. This includes marine, and conventional and unconventional carbonate reservoirs. The workshop combines seismic, well log and rock data, and the concepts of sequence stratigraphy to develop interpretations that help predict carbonate hydrocarbon systems, and characterize carbonate reservoirs and seals. At the completion of this workshop, participants will be able to integrate carbonate and sequence stratigraphy principles to their work. The workshop covers (1) a review of the different carbonate platform types (i.e., ramps, prograding banks, and rimmed platforms, both isolated and attached) and their different seismic facies; (2) an introduction to carbonate sequence stratigraphy and the seismic facies and attributes of carbonate reservoirs and seals; and (3) the recognition of karst using seismic data. Exercises will illustrate these topics and include integrated seismic-well log-rock examples.

The workshop is designed for geologists and geophysicists who are exploring for and developing oil and gas fields in carbonate systems. Some experience with carbonate rocks is helpful. Particularly appropriate for those desiring to integrate seismic, well logs and core data to develop predictive models for carbonate systems.

Important Notes Regarding Short Courses

  • Short courses are limited in size and are reserved on a first-come, first-served basis and must be accompanied by full payment.
  • If you do not plan on attending the convention, a US $30 enrollment fee will be added to the short course fee. This fee may be applied toward registration if you decide to attend the convention at a later date.
  • A wait list is automatically created if a short course sells out. The AAPG Convention Department will notify you if space becomes available.
  • Before purchasing non-refundable airline tickets, confirm that the course will take place, as courses may be canceled if under-subscribed.
  • Please register well before 23 February. Short course cancellation due to low enrollment will be considered at this time. No refunds will be allowed on short courses after this date.
  • We will continue to take registrations for short courses not canceled, either until they are sold out or closed.

There are a limited number of discounted registrations available for students on a first-come, first-served basis. If a discounted space is still available, it will show up during the online registration process. If discounted spots are no longer available, you may register at the full fee; if we are able to add additional discounted spots we will refund the difference at that time.
